Lewisville seizes 1st playoff win in 7 years, wins 24-21 in OT
Review By: David Haynes
Lewisville defeated the Colleyville Heritage Panthers 24-21 in overtime Thursday night at Texas Stadium in the 5A Bi-District Playoff round to advance to the Area Championship game to take on the Euless Trinity Trojans who beat Arlington Martin 31-0.

This was easily one of the best Lewisville games in many years, dating back to a 2004 overtime win over Plano East and also a 5OT Marcus win in 2000.

The game started with Colleyville Heritage marching down the field on their first drive and scoring a touchdown from 4 yards out compliments of senior QB Tyler Little to go up 7-0 early. Then after a stalled Lewisville drive, the Panthers backup QB Steven Hill threw a 37 yard strike to REC Eddie Foster who raced into the end zone to put them up 14-0 at the start of the second quarter. The Farmers quickly regained their composure and responded a few plays later with a 51 yard touchdown bomb from junior QB Jordon Dotson to senior REC Travis Rickman to make it 14-7. Just a few plays later, senior LB Jason Minor intercepted a Tyler Little pass to set the Farmers up in great field position with around 2 minutes remaining in the half. Lewisville then took the ball down on a few plays that drained the clock out completely and Dotson threw a 1 yard play action touchdown to REC Nate Fisher to tie things up at 14 going into halftime.

The third quarter was filled with defensive stands throughout on both sides. But shortly into the fourth quarter, the Farmer defense came up big as Roger Trammel swooped in and caused Colleyville QB Tyler Little to fumble the ball. Lewisville then pounced on the ball at the Colleyville 20 yard line to setup a perfect chance. After a penalty backed Lewisville up 5 yards, Jordon Dotson tucked it in, had perfect blocking and ran it in 27 yards to put the Farmers up 21-14. Lewisville would hold Colleyville two more times, including a huge goal line stand at the 6 yard line but several plays later after the Lewisville offense was unable to move the ball, Will Atterberry shanked the punt which lead to it falling dead at their own 30 yard line. This proved costly as the Panthers took advantage of the mistake and scored the game tying touchdown with a minute to play to knot things up at 21 a piece.

Lewisville had one last chance to score and got to about the Colleyville 30 yard line but a sack and some penalties held the Farmers out of field goal range. Time ran out and overtime then began. In the first overtime, the Lewisville defense came up huge with a sack and forced a missed 44 yard field goal to end the Panther threat. The Lewisville offense then took over and things didn’t look good as Dotson was sacked for 9 yards but he then made up for it with a 15 yard pass to REC Jamirie Howard. Dotson then ran 3 yards but was stopped short of the first down making it a 4th and 1. Then came the game winning field goal of 33 yards by Gabe Gampos and the celebration started.

Final Thoughts:

After going 7 years without a playoff win, Lewisville finally gets it in overtime in grand fashion. This win could mark a new beginning for a new era of Farmer dominance and playoff appearances once again. This was a slugfest between two great teams and neither wanted to go home for the season and hats off to all those who gave it their all.

There will be a lot to look at the coming week and a great deal to improve upon, especially on the offensive side. Jordon Dotson overthrew receivers at least two times that would have been sure touchdowns and he also held onto the ball instead of throwing it away when he was well outside the tackle box. I’m sure they’ll see this on tape and work it out this week for they’ll need to be perfect next week to advance.

Notable mentions: Senior Kicker Gabe Campos with the game winning 33 yard field goal in overtime, senior QB Jordon Dotson in going 11-22-0-125 and also having a 27 yard touchdown run, senior RB Ivory Cook on getting the tough yards with 16 carries for 80 yards, senior DE Roger Trammell for having a sack, numerous tackles and causing a fumble deep inside Colleyville territory which later lead to a score, senior DB Marquin Watts with several pass deflections and numerous big hits that rattled the Colleyville receivers and senior LB Jason Minor with a number of tackles and an interception that setup a Lewisville score.

A Look Ahead:

The Farmers enter round 2 (Area Championship) of the 5A Division 1 playoffs facing Euless Trinity (9-1) Friday at 3:00pm, most likely Friday or Saturday afternoon at Texas Stadium. Both teams present a great challenge in that their primarily run based offenses and the Farmers have struggled against the run at times this season. Look for a full preview next week for a huge second round match up.
