Lewisville stumbles greatly in 35-7 defeat
Review By: David Haynes

The Farmers picked a bad day to have more hiccups in terms of execution and consistency in an almost embarrassing home loss and it’s certainly one of the worst in the past 3 years to Garland Naaman Forest.

Lewisville seemed to start out in semi decent shape in holding Naaman Forest to 0 points on their first drive of the game but the next drive for the Farmers yielded nothing as they dropped pass after pass and took bad penalties as well. This gave Naaman Forest a shot in the arm and their talented duo of running backs took over. RB Demario Broadnax scored their first touchdown and the second was a 31 yard pass to Stephen Eggins which came as somewhat of a shock since the Rangers were running through the Farmer defense rather well.

So at half, the Farmers trailed 14-0. This was defiantly not an insurmountable lead. Lewisville showed its poised as the defense stood tall on the Rangers opening drive and the offense finally began to churn with several QB keepers up the middle by Dotson and a quick pass or two sprinkled in. This masterful execution worked great until Dotson was stripped of the ball and Ranger defensive lineman Michael Daniels returned it 65 yards for the back breaking touchdown. The horror ensued on the following kickoff as the Lewisville returner had the ball literally bounce off of his chest and then fly 5+ yards into the waiting arms of a Ranger defender.

From that point, Lewisville couldn’t muster anything until a game ending shutout stopping Farmer pride touchdown drive which made the final score 35-7.

Final Thoughts:

This game was truly a pain to watch. This team has talent here and there but there is a mixture of problems for the Farmers. First, execution, execution, execution, receivers dropping balls all night or running wrong routes or the defense looking either dumbfounded or just plain scared. Second, the play calling was a bit suspect, since when did the Lewisville Fighting Farmers completely abandon the running game for an entire half? We had our full back with four carries for the entire game! (I think that’s a record?)

Where are these two underclassman backs that I saw during the Denton Ryan scrimmage? They didn’t look half bad. Why aren’t they being utilized? Why go for the long pass or passing on three consecutive downs when running up the middle is getting us 5-12 yards per play. We were chipping away at Naaman until we changed our method of execution to the one that wasn’t working. The sanity of this eludes me.

I will give Naaman Forest a heap of credit though; they have a great offense led by two outstanding division 1 calibur running backs. I swear sometimes it looked as if they were lathered in Crisco. It was THAT hard to bring them down. If the Farmers don’t find a solution on defense and learn to execute thoroughly on offense then we’re in for a long season, err, make that short season.

Noteable Mentions: Sr. QB Jordon Dotson with 79 yards rushing on 16 carries and the Farmer offensive line for opening some holes for the run game when it was there.

A Look Ahead:

The Farmers take on the Grapevine Mustangs in Grapevine this Friday. Grapevine has looked anything but good and is coming off of two blowout losses. This should be a favorable matchup for the Farmers and should help them going into the bye week.
